Should I use Research or Private for the Leiolai API?
Use Leiolai Private for confidential work and Leiolai Research for non-sensitive tasks. Leiolai API keys can be restricted to one mode, or an unrestricted key can choose a mode per request. The selected mode and thinking effort determine the published input and output token rates.

Which API value means Research?
Set mode to non-private for Leiolai Research. Set mode to private for Private.
When should I choose Private?
Choose Leiolai Private when a request contains confidential information or the work calls for confidential handling. Examples include internal drafts, unpublished business material, and code you want to keep private. Leiolai does not train or fine-tune on Private conversations or Private developer API requests.
Understand PrivateWhen should I choose Research?
Leiolai Research is suited to challenging, non-sensitive questions. Use sample data or public material for a Research integration. Choose Private before sending personal or confidential information, and check the mode in your actual request rather than assuming a client selected the intended setting.
Understand ResearchDoes every key need an explicit mode?
An unrestricted Leiolai key requires mode on each request. A Private-only or Leiolai Research-only key can omit the field. This makes a restricted key useful in a third-party client that supports the request format but has no custom mode setting.
Choose an API key restrictionCan a request override a restricted key?
A request cannot override the key’s mode restriction. Sending non-private with a Leiolai Private-only key, or private with a Research-only key, returns HTTP 403 with api_key_mode_restricted. Change the request or use a key authorized for the intended mode.
Does mode change the model ID?
No. Use leiolai-1 for both Research and Private requests. Select mode with private or non-private.
Leiolai 1 and the model identifierHow does mode affect API pricing?
Leiolai Research and Private have separate rate tables, and each table has four effort levels. Calculate input and output costs using the rate for both the chosen mode and effort.
Compare the published token ratesHow can I check a third-party client’s mode?
Check your client’s Leiolai provider configuration for custom request-body settings, or use a restricted key for your intended mode. An unrestricted key requires mode on every request.
